State Policy Review

Policy Innovation Lab researchers will be conducting a variety of reviews of state policy measures related to derelict trap prevention and reduction to help agency officials and other stakeholders understand effective measures and develop an effective and coordinated approach.
Comprehensive state policy review –  Current

There currently exists no comprehensive review of state policy related to derelict trap management. PIL researchers are creating a first of its kind overview of this topic, which will help TRAP Program researchers identify workable policy approaches and gaps.


August 2026 — An Introduction to Derelict Trap Management Policy (PDF)

The PIL has identified several policies that can be incorporated into state derelict trap management programs. The policy primer document linked above and graphic below are intended to provide readers with a general understanding of the ways in which states manage derelict fishing traps.
