Overarching Barriers to Trap Removal

Derelict traps clearly negatively impact coastal fisheries economies and environments, but there exist some fundamental barriers to their removal. PIL researchers will be examining these barriers to identify policy approaches that can both accelerate trap removal while protecting fishermen.

PIL researchers are investigating state standards for trap removal – who can remove them, when, what types of approvals are required, and other policies. This review can help states see what approaches may work that both maximize trap removal and protect the private property of fishermen.
